The track is the first single from Eminem’s upcoming ninth Album, the news around said that it will be titled Revival. The release date of the album is not yet confirmed, but an announcement is expected soon, considering the rapper’s scheduled appearance on Saturday Night Live on November 18. He’s also due to perform the song live at the MTV Europe Music Awards this weekend.
Over the last few weeks, Eminem has been teasing the project with a fake drug website and medical infomercials, pressing fans to “seize the moment” with a cutting-edge drug called “Revival”.
Much to the dismay of the Vatican, an approx. 1500-2000 year old bible was found in Turkey, in the Ethnography Museum of Ankara. Discovered and kept secret in the year 2000, the book contains the Gospel of Barnabas – a disciple of Christ – which shows that Jesus was not crucified, nor was he the son of God, but a Prophet.
The book also calls Apostle Paul “The Impostor”. The book also claims that Jesus ascended to heaven alive, and that Judas Iscariot was crucified in his place. A report by The National Turk says that the Bible was seized from a gang of smugglers in a Mediterranean-area operation. The report states the gang was charged with smuggling antiquities, illegal excavations, and the possession of explosives. The books itself is valued as high as 40 Million Turkish Liras (approx. 28 mil. Dollars). Man, where is the Thieves Guild, when you need them?
Authenticity According to reports, experts and religious authorities in Tehram insist that the book is original. The book itself is written with gold lettering, onto loosely-tied leather in Aramaic, the language of Jesus Christ. The text maintains a vision similar to Islam, contradicting the New Testament's teachings of Christianity. Jesus also foresees the coming of the Prophet Muhammad, who would found Islam 700 years later. It is believed that, during the Council of Nicea, the Catholic Church hand-picked the gospels that form the Bible as we know it today; omitting the Gospel of Barnabas (among many others) in favor of the four canonical gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Many biblical texts have begun to surface over time, including those of the Dead Sea and Gnostic Gospels; but this book especially, seems to worry the Vatican. The Catholic Church wants in What does this mean to Christian-derived religions and their followers? Quite a tight spot. The Vatican has asked Turkish authorities to let them examine the contents of the book within the Church. Now that the book has been found, will they come to accept the it and its evidence? Will they deny it altogether? Call it a “Muslim lie”, as did the “Truth” Magazine, in 2000? To many, this book is a beacon of hope, that believers soon realize that the object of their adoration is arbitrary; and that all text, especially religious text, is subject to interpretation. What does this mean to atheists/agnostics/secular thinkers? Is the text real? Fake? Does it matter? Hopefully, this news inspires the religious to ask questions, instead of pointing fingers or believing anything blindly. Please, don't go poking fun or tossing around the “I told you so!”s. The biggest danger of faith is when people believe what they want to believe, defending against any and all evidence; especially when that evidence revolutionizes their foundation from the ground up. And the biggest culprit to that danger is the ego trap: rejecting/criticizing others, for being unlike you. For centuries, the “defense” of blind faith has driven nations to war, violence, discrimination, slavery and to become the society of automatons that we are today; and for just as long, it has been justified with lies. If you know better, act like it.
President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, who came to power in June 2014, has
become the first Egyptian President to attend Christmas Mass.
In
an unusual event, attendees were shown on television cheering and
clapping as the President entered Cairo’s Abbasiya Cathedral in an
unannounced event.
In a short speech given during the mass, President Sisi said he was there to wish them a Merry Christmas.
President
Sisi said that the world is watching at Egypt during these difficult
times and urged Egyptians to remain united as ‘one hand.’
Egypt’s
President added that ‘we will build the country together…we will love
each other,’ and ended his speech congratulating Egypt’s Coptic
Community.
Coptic Christmas is held on January 7 each year. The difference in the date is the result of using the Gregorian Calendar.
“One, two, shhhh, she's
counting. Ariel runs, tiny legs waddling across pavement, her chubby
fingers barely able to grasp her daily Pepsi, she runs.
Poison in hand, smile on face, looking for hiding spots, three. Ariel
stops, she takes a sip. She's already consumed 1460 sodas in her
lifetime, she's 5. She runs, inhaling deeply as her lungs try to catch
up with her feet.
Kayla's 35, 4, 5, she counts the lights hanging from the hospital roof
as she's rushed to surgery, they flicker above her as she tries to
remember every memory she's ever had involving her feet, but her mind
won’t let her wander from this moment, this second, this flickering
light, a hush whisper, the last moment she'll have with her feet. She
blames it on her diabetes, as if this disease has a mind of its own.
Doctors blame it on the 4410 Pepsis she’s been drinking since childhood.
Little Ariel can barely spell, she's 6, and knows nothing about fructose
or dextrin but neither does Kayla. Beaten, living in a broken home, she
just keeps trying to find pieces of herself at the end of that bottle.
Ariel only knows the sizzle of bubbles, the aches she feels in her
tummy, the big words doctors use to describe her condition. They tell
her mom that her kidney's are failing, her blood sugar is too high, the
pain she feels that mommy can't fix because mommy's been surviving off
of ramen and sodas because mommy can barely afford to live.
Kayla sits back in her wheelchair trying to look over her stomach but
she can't. She can't see the stumps, the spaces where her feet used to
be, she can't see herself, when she looks at the reflection staring back
at her she's just a person she turned into but she can't stop, bottle
after bottle she can't stop, 6, 7. When Ariel turns 7 they see her dying
behind overstuffed teddy bears and deflated balloons, it was her
birthday. 8, 9, I've heard of death before, but I swear, there's
something foreign about the way it creeps to the lips of a 7-year-old,
10.
Every 10 seconds someone dies from diabetes, and in the time it's taken
me to recite this poem, 15 people will die.”
This haunting spoken word poem comes from The Bigger Picture, an
organization spreading diabetes awareness.
I cried when I watched this video. A frightening reality planted itself
in front of me as I remembered that my own grandmother had passed away
from diabetes almost 20 years ago. She spent her last years injecting
multiple daily insulin shots, in and out of a hospital bed 300 km away
from her hometown. I remember my mother telling me that nan used to
drink a lot of soda.
The implications of a disease are hard to fully grasp unless you or
someone you love has suffered through it. But even more horrifying than
my nan's sole story, is the fact that diabetes is a reality for millions
of people worldwide at this very moment. In America alone, over 29
million people were diagnosed with diabetes in 2012. It stands as the
7th leading cause of death in that country.
Think About The Sugar You Consume
According to these statistics, Americans consume close to 50 billion
liters of soda per year, which equates to about 216 liters, or about 57
gallons per person. That is a colossal amount of sugar. And not just any
sugar, but some of the worst we know of – fructose, in the form of high
fructose corn syrup (HFCS).
Tragically, high fructose corn syrup, in the form of soda, has become
the number one source of calories in the United States, and it is very
clear that it is the primary cause of the obesity and diabetes epidemic.
Soda companies are masters at fooling customers and masking their
products as fun, cool and delicious. Take this commercial for example:
The “Thin Line” spoken poem not only exposes the hard reality about
diabetes, but it also raises attention around the specific
socio-economic demographic who are commonly affected by this disease,
“Nearly 1 in 2 children of color born in the year 2000 will get diabetes
in their lifetime.”
The truth is that most low-income families often end up spending what
little they have on these junk food products because they don't have
access to healthier options. The consequences are heartbreaking and
pretty terrifying. With the ever-increasing cost of living and declining
wages, more and more families are being forced into poverty as the
middle class is being eradicated.
It may seem like common sense for some to stray far away from
high-fructose corn syrup sodas, but a large majority of the population
are not properly educated on the implications of poor nutrition, a vast
percentage of these people being low-income families.
If someone you know consumes soda on a regular basis, be the one to
supply them with the facts they need to know. Soda is an empty, modified
can of death.
Raise your voice today and join the conversation about diabetes.
Oil pulling is an
ancient Ayurvedic remedy for oral health and detoxification. It involves
the use of pure oils as agents for pulling harmful bacteria, fungus,
and other organisms out of the mouth, teeth, gums and even throat.
How To Oil Pull
The most effective oil pulling is done by placing around a tablespoon of
cold pressed organic sesame oil into the mouth and swishing the oil
around the mouth for approximately 10-15 minutes and then spitting it
out.
Other oils such as extra virgin cold pressed coconut, sunflower and
olive oil have been used, although sesame oil is considered one of the
best oils for this practice. It is recommended to alter oils every
couple of days to get the full benefit.
Putting high quality organic oils into the mouth has a multi-effect
outcome.
First, the oils mix with the saliva, turning it into a thin, white
liquid. Lipids in the oils begin to pull out toxins from the saliva. As
the oil is swished around the mouth, teeth, gums and tongue, the oil
continues to absorb toxins, and usually ends up turning thick and
viscous and white. Once the oil has reached this consistency, it is spit
out before the toxins are reabsorbed.
What Does Oil Pulling Do?
Multiple scientific studies show the efficacy of oil pulling therapy.
One study shows that oil pulling with sesame oil can boost overall oral
health. Specifically, using sesame oil as an oral health agent helps to
reduce the amount of S. mutans (germ) count in both teeth plaque and
mouth saliva. Scientists believe that the lipids in the oil both pull
out bacteria, as well as stop bacterial from sticking to the walls of
the oral cavity.
Oil pulling may also increase saponification in the mouth, creating a
soapy environment that cleanses the mouth as vegetable fat is an
emulsifier by nature. Most interesting is perhaps the ability of oil to
cleanse out harmful bacteria, as well as reduce fungal overgrowth. These
oils also possibly help in cellular restructuring, and are related to
the proper functioning of the lymph nodes and other internal organs.
Additional benefits of oil pulling for oral health:
Overall strengthening of the teeth and gums and jaws
Prevention of diseases of the gums and mouth, such as cavities and
gingivitis
Prevention for bad breath
Potential holistic remedy for bleeding gums
Prevention of dryness of the lips, mouth and throat
Possible holistic treatment for TMJ and general soreness in the jaw
area
Benefits Beyond the Mouth?
Ancient Ayurvedic health practitioners believed that oil pulling could
reduce more than just diseases of the mouth and throat. Today, many
holistic practitioners tout its use for a variety of health concerns.
It is believed that these oils help the lymphatic system of the body as
harmful bacteria are removed and beneficial microflora are given with a
healthy environment to flourish. Because of this holistic perspective,
oil pulling has been used as a preventative health measure for many
other conditions.
Other possible benefits of oil pulling for overall health include:
Migraine headache relief
Correcting hormone imbalances
Reducing inflammation of arthritis
May help with gastro-enteritis
Aids in the reduction of eczema
May reduce symptoms of bronchitis
Helps support normal kidney function
May help reduce sinus congestion
Some people report improved vision
Helps reduce insomnia
Reduced hangover after alcohol consumption
Aids in reducing pain
Reduces the symptoms of allergies
Helps detoxify the body of harmful metals and organisms
Scientific Studies on Sesame Oil & Oil Pulling
Sesame oil is particularly high in the antioxidantssesamol, sesamin, and
sesamolin. It also holds a high concentration of Vitamin E and
polyunsaturated fatty acids. These antioxidants have been found to stop
the absorption of negative forms of cholesterol in the liver. Multiple
studies have shown the antibacterial capacities of sesame oil. These
studies support the use of oil pulling in the prevention of dental
cavities and gingivitis.
A 2007 study looking into the effect of oil pulling (with sunflower oil)
on plaque and gingivitis on oral soft and hard tissues. Results found
that after 45 days of oil pulling, subjects showed a statistically
significant reduction in gingivitis.
Another study, conducted in 2008 found a “remarkable reduction in the
total count of bacteria” in the mouth, and an overall marked reduction
in susceptibility dental cavities. The antibacterial activity of sesame
oil was also studied and found to have an effect on the Streptococcus
mutans in the mouth.
In fact, these studies showed an overall reduction of bacteria from 10
to 33.4% in participants, and after 40 days of oil-pulling, participants
were found to show 20% in average reduction in oral bacteria. Moreover,
half of all participants in this case study showed a drastic reduction
in susceptibility to dental caries.
Easiest Way to Whiten your Teeth
Here is one more fantastic tip. Peel off to get whiter teeth with the
banana peel. Minerals found on the banana's inside show an incredible
effect on teeth. The magnesium, potassium and manganese soak up into
teeth and then whiten them. This methodology is extremely simple to be
followed. Simply rub the banana's inside, gently for two minutes, around
your teeth. Soon, you will be able to find that the bananas would
become yellow and your teeth white.
In the summer months
ants can be a real pest around the home and garden.
Here are some natural remedies using household ingredients to keep them
at bay.
Ants come into our homes in their search for food.
Apart from the obvious advice of covering food, clearing up spillages
and having garbage bins with lids here are some natural ways of beating
their advance without using any harsh chemicals. 1. Baking Soda and Powdered Sugar
Mix together an equal amount of powdered sugar (also called icing sugar)
and baking soda (formally called sodium bicarbonate). Place small
amounts against the walls or in other areas where you would not normally
walk but where you would normally see the ants. The ants will be
attracted to the sugar and will eat some of it and collect more to take
home to feed others, so all of them will get their share.
Powdered sugar is essential, larger grained sugar will not work. This is
because the sugar and baking soda powders are similar in size and, once
mixed together, the ants cannot separate the two items, so, as they eat
the sugar, they will also ingest the baking soda, which they would
otherwise avoid.
Once the ants eat the baking soda it will react with the formic acid in
their stomachs and cause gas. The bodies of ants are unlike humans and
they cannot eliminate gas so it will build up inside and eliminate them. 2. Vinegar
Classic vinegar is effective in getting rid of ants. Simply spray their
entry paths with vinegar and they will be repelled by the strong odor.
Include corners, counter tops, sinks and window ledges. Allow the
vinegar to dry.
Apple cider vinegar can be mixed in equal measures with water and spray
as before. This does not kill them but it will stop them returning.
Adding a few capfuls of vinegar to your floor cleaner on tiled floors
also helps in keeping them at bay.
A more fragrant option is to mix vinegar, dish detergent and a few drops
of peppermint oil. Usually spraying this once around the affected zones
should leave these areas ant free for a season.
3. Salt Or Pepper
Table salt is the one of the best and the cheapest way to get rid of
ants. Use ordinary table salt not health boosting Himalayan salt. Simply
boil water and add a fairly large amount salt to it, stirring until it
is dissolved. Pour into a spray bottle and spray where you usually see
the ants.
This also works with cayenne and ground black pepper.
4. Soap
Regular dishwashing detergents are very harmful to ants. The soap
components break down in waxy layers of the pests’ exoskeleton, causing
dehydration. Mix soap with water and spray it in the entry points.
5. Lemons
Lemon juice is the enemy of ants as the acid interferes with their
internal tracking capabilities. Either pure lemon juice can be sprayed
around the entry points, or mix some fresh lemon juice with water and
spray around the affected zones in your kitchen.
There are several household products that repel ants as opposed to
killing them. By using these at entry points you will create a repelling
barrier that they will not cross. These include :
cinnamon (both ground and in oil form)
chili powder
cayenne pepper
chalk
cornmeal
baby powder
black pepper
ground coffee
food grade diatomaceous earth
lavender and mint sachets in closets, drawers, pantry, etc. repel
ants
By trying one of these, or even a combination your home should be ant
free.

Take a good look at your fingernails and you may notice subtle variations in the texture or color; white spots, a rosy tinge, rippling or bumps in the surface to mention a few. These imperfections may not look like much to you, but it’s more important than you might think to maintain healthy fingernails. That’s because to the trained eye, nails can provide valuable indications about your overall health.
Hold a hand level with your nose about a foot out from your face and scrutinize each one. Look at the grooves, curves, ridges and dips. Notice how thick or thin they are and if there are any stark differences. Are your nails are chipped or broken. Make a note of the color of the nail itself, the skin under it as well as the skin around the nail. You need to get into the habit of knowing your nails and any changes that can occur. Changes are a good indication of the onset of several health problems. Here are 8 of the most common nail issues: 1. RIDGES: Healthy nails should have no obvious ridge lines and should be virtually smooth to the naked eye. Ridges can indicate several health issues including:
•Inflammatory arthritis
•Iron deficiency
•Lupus (with red lines at the base of your nails)
Don’t ignore these ridges by using a nail buffer to smooth the surface – these are warnings to be noticed! 2. THICK NAILS: It is fairly obvious is you have a thickening of the nails and they can have several causes including:
•Thick/separated nails can indicate thyroid disease or psoriasis
•Thick/rough-surfaced nails can be a sign of fungal infection
•Unusually thick nails could be a symptom of a circulation problem
•Thick nails alone could even signal lung disease
Thickening is fairly easy to notice when it first appears but please note that allergic reactions to some medications manifest themselves as thick nails! 3. DISCOLORED NAILS: A healthy nail bed should be pink with a slight pinky white moon shape at the base. Streaks of any other stronger shades or colors can indicate health issues, as can nails that are tinged by other colors such as:
•Dark stripes towards the top of the nail are associated with aging and congestive heart failure
•Blueish tinge to the nails can be a sign of depleted oxygen levels in your blood
•Green nails are usually a sign of a bacterial infection
•White nails indicate liver disease, such as hepatitis
•Red streaks on the nail bed could be a warning of an infection of the heart valves
•Dull nails in general mean a deficiency of vitamins
Inspect your nails when they are clean and you should know when the color changes 4: PITTED NAILS: Sometimes small dips can just be the result of a bash to the hand in general, but sometimes more attention should be paid as they can be a symptom of:
•Zinc deficiency (usually the pit will form a line across the middle of the nailbed)
•Connective tissue disorder
•Psoriasis
•Alopecia areata, which is an autoimmune disorder that results in hair loss
Learn the difference between an injury related imperfection which should not last too long, and a potential disease related imperfection which will not clear up. 5. DRY AND BRITTLE NAILS: Healthy nails should not require cuticle oil and moisturizers as they should maintain themselves. Excessively dry or brittle nails can be a sign of a hormonal balance problem or a bacterial infection.
•Thyroid disease can result in brittle, dry nails that also crack and split very easily
•Fungus can cause nails to become dry or even crumbly and is a common problem
Both these potential problems can be treated and the nails will return to good health once a full growing cycle has passed (hand nails grow at about 1 mm per week so on average the full life cycle of human nail is about 6 months). 6. CONCAVE OR SPOON SHAPED NAILS: What are known as ‘full spoon’ nails are very soft and curve upwards with the dip being pronounced enough to hold a drop or two of liquid. This usually is an indication of:
•Heart disease
•Iron deficiency (usually from anemia)
•Hypothyroidism
•Hemachromatosis, which is a liver disorder caused by the body absorbing too much iron
If medical intervention clears up the root cause then the nails will return to a normal healthy shape with time. 7. CLUBBED NAILS: This is when the skin around the nail bed can appear inflamed or unusually puffy. This can mean:
•Liver disease
•Lung disease, especially if you already have trouble breathing
•Inflammatory bowel disease
•AIDS
Most of these health issues will often have already given you other symptoms but the corresponding nail condition can help with diagnosis.
8. SPLIT NAILS: Often our nails split if we have injured them. But when no trauma has occured but the nail flakes away layer by layer it can be a result of several issues:
•Chronic malnutrition
•Deficiency of Vitamin C, folic acid or proteins
•Split nails together with a pitted nail bed can indicate psoriasis
Eating a healthy well balanced diet can eliminate many of these causes.
Obviously our fingernails will not be the only signs of these diseases, but they can provide confirmation or else the motivation to seek further medical attention.
Strong, healthy nails reflect a strong, healthy you. Share with anyone you know may need to pay attention to their nails.
The days of the hovercraft are upon us. AsGoogle's self-driving cars prepare to roll out onto the streets of Nevada, Volkswagen one-ups everyone with its concept design for a hover car.
The Volkswagen hover car is a product of the "People's Car Project" in China, which called upon customers to contribute design ideas for Volkswagen's model of the future.
The crowd-sourcing initiative debuted in China last year and, to date, has inspired 33 million website visitors to submit 119,000 ideas.
The hovercraft, as seen in the concept video above, uses electromagnetic levitation to float along its own grid above the regular road network; distance sensors keep the craft from colliding with other vehicles. The disc-shaped pod seats two people and is controlled by a joystick that offers amazing maneuverability. The car can move both back-and-forth and side-to-side and can even spin on an axis. To top it off, the concept car produces zero emissions.
Along with the hover car concept, Volkswagen presented two other ideas from the "People's Car Project" at the 2012 Beijing Auto Show. Though the hover car is by far the coolest, the music car, which causes the exterior color of the car to change with the driver's choice of music, is a close second. Volkswagen also debuted an advanced touchscreen smart key that features information about crucial vehicle functions.
Volkswagen Director of Marketing Luca de Meo told the audience that the innovative ideas derived from the crowd-sourcing project mark the beginning of a new era.
“We are no longer just building cars for, but also with customers and at the same time initiating a national dialog which gives us a deep insight into the design preferences, needs and requirements of Chinese customers,” de Meo said during the event.

You would never think that a single plant could solve most of the world's problems, well it can. Hemp has over 50,000 uses, why this plant remains illegal is causing confusion among many. Everything from clothes, medicine, fabrics, fuel and more, hemp is definitely a large threat to a variety of corporations that control energy, health and a number of other industries. Many corporations would see a decline in profit if hemp were to be legalized. One in particular this article will focus on is the automobile industry.
The world's most Eco-friendly car, the Kestrel, was designed in Canada by Calgary-based Motive Industries INC. Unlike the United States government, the Canadian government is open to hemp farming and actively supporting the industrial hemp industry and its potential benefit for us and our environment. It has a top speed of 90 km per hour and a range of approximately 100 miles before needing to be recharged. It's powered by a motor made by TM4 Electrodynamic Systems, a Quebec based company. Its weight is approximately 2,500 pounds, and has a very affordable price given the fact that hemp is very easy to grow and requires nothing but the sun. It fits 4 passengers and the production version of it was supposed to be available this year. Since the unveiling of it a couple of years ago, everything all of a sudden has become quiet. You can contact the developers here for more information if you are interested or would like to get your hands on one. The body of the car is completely impact-resistant and made entirely out of hemp. When we think of cars we think of gasoline, steel, pollution, etc. Even though we have had some innovative and visually pleasing cars on the road today, it is difficult to ignore the sheer environmental impact that modern cars create. This isn't the first time we've seen a hemp car making noise, did you know that Henry Ford spent more than a decade researching and building his Model T car? This was in the 1940′s, it was completely made from hemp. This car was 10 times stronger than steel and was also designed to run off of hemp bio-fuel! Whatever happened to this idea? Read more about that here. To think that even one of the founders of a major car manufacturer was trying to give the world a vehicle that was safe, strong and clean for the environment is good to know. At the same time, his invention was so suppressed that it is somewhat disheartening. How did we go from such an obvious and intelligent discovery, to using gasoline, steel and other non-harmonious materials? It's important to keep in mind that not only do we need to look at the pollution factor of material while in use, we should also be aware of the pollution caused from manufacturing and creating of cars from raw materials. Looking at hemp, it complies with every Eco-standard that exists today; in fact, it blows them out of the water. The suppression of this technology is largely due to the fact that hemp was outlawed in the US in 1937 due to the potential damaging effect it would have on many powerful industries at that time. I highly recommend you check out the full story we wrote on how hemp became illegal. The Kestrel's hemp composite body shell passed its crash test in strong form, unlike steel, the panels bounce back into shape after impact. Hemp also has the same mechanical properties as glass. It is even lighter than glass and these properties help boost fuel efficiency. The oldest known records of hemp farming go back 5000 years in China. For thousands of years, 90% of all ships sails and rope made from hemp. Hemp is an unlimited, forever lasting resource. For that reason alone it is a threat to our current financial and economic systems. It seems the systems we have in place are used to justify why products like this cannot be mass marketed and mass distributed. It's time for a change, and it's time for us to implement new methods and technologies that are more harmonious with the planet.

Google today announced the launch of Google Partners,
a new program aimed at agencies and Web professionals who help
businesses succeed online by giving them resources, support, and
training. As the name implies, the company will be achieving this goal
by connecting small business to its trusted partners.
If you’re wondering why Google hasn’t already done this before,
that’s a fair question. The fact is the company has been toying with
such initiatives for a while: this is merely an amalgamation of all of
them.
Google Partners brings all of the company’s existing programs
together under a new platform. This means agencies can find “all” of the
company’s resources under one roof, including certification via free
Google exams, access to Google experts and agency peers through the
community, as well as sales and marketing toolkits.
Google Partners has three objectives, all aimed at helping customers:
Connect more closely with Google. With access to special events,
training and the latest research and product updates, Partners stay
ahead of the curve by working directly with Google.
Demonstrate credibility. The new Google Partner badge recognizes
companies that excel with Google’s products. Their businesses are
healthy, their customers are happy, and they use Google best practices.
Grow your business. Partners who’ve earned the badge are listed on
Google Partner Search and get a direct connection to potential clients.
In other words, Google wants to help build the next few Googles. If
all goes well, it can partner with them and maybe even acquire a few.
Here’s the company’s pitch: “Every business should have the help it
needs to succeed on the web. Every day, agencies and web professionals
work with businesses big and small to bring us closer to that reality.”
Google of course wants to build its own reality.

Canal Cruiser – Amsterdam, Holland
The first pleasure cruise in the history of the Amsterdam canals took place in 1621 when Queen Elisabeth Stuart of Bohemia was welcomed into the city in a parade of festively decorated admiralty sloops, with thousands of Amsterdammers cheering on bridges and canal-sides.
For exactly three decades genetically modified organisms(GMOs)
for agricultural purposes have been in production. Under the premise of
“trying to feed the world”, agricultural, chemical and chemical defense
companies, their investors included, have given great praise to the
transgenic creations their science teams have invented. If the products
of genetically modified foods are so amazing that they will “end hunger”
then why is the language praising them so uninformative, so incomplete,
and why is the public uneducated as to what they even are?
If those who produce GMOs aren’t going to educate the public on what
their products contain, and their results, then we might as well perform
the research and bring the knowledge for you. As a means of education
this article will specifically highlight the GMO technology ‘Bt’. We’ll
talk a bit about the origination of Bt, it’s use within GMO technology,
the byproducts that have resulted from it’s use and conclude with health
and environmental effects. What does the Bt stand for anyway?
“Bacillus thuringiensis, or simply Bt, is a naturally
occurring soil bacterium that, when sprayed on plants, is toxic to
certain pest insects. For years, farmers and home gardeners have used Bt
as a microbial spray pesticide to control caterpillars, certain types
of beetles, as well as mosquitoes and black flies.”
- EPA on Bt Regulation
It’s
unbelievable that even this small bit of information is completely
unknown to the average person who eats produce containing Bt, Bt genes
or it’s byproduct almost daily. Bacillus thuringiensis has been used as a
natural insecticide for nearly a century and can still be bought by
anyone in it’s natural form today. This natural insecticide was first
discovered by the Japanese scientist, Shigetane Ishiwatari, in 1901
while investigating the sotto disease. The sotto disease was a large
problem at that time as it was killing the silkworm population, and silk
is a very important cultural and economic resource in the region. When
Ishiwatari isolated the bacterium he named it Bacillus sotto but when it
was rediscovered in 1911 killing moths in Thuringia, Germany. The
German scientist Ernst Berliner had renamed it to what we know today,
but Bt wasn’t actively used as an insecticide by humans until the year
1920 in France. The History of Bt
Bt in it’s natural form is considered a safe, natural and non-toxic
insectide that is deadly to specific insects. For Bt to kill these
insects it first has to be eaten. Upon digestion crystalline protein
chains are released which slowly punch holes through the insect’s cell
walls, causing the insect to stop eating, and spores of Bt begin
germinating throughout the insects entire body. Different Bt strains
kill certain types of insects, each Bt strain can only attach to
specific types of receptors in the gut. How Does Bt Work?
Effects on the environment are largely considered mild.
It is a soil bacterium and thrives at body temperature. When exposed to
higher temperatures such as sunlight (UV light), however, its half-life
greatly decreases to around 3.8 hours. As soon as it is exposed to a
warmer-than-normal medium, B. thuringiensis’ spores start deteriorating
and lose viability within four days. Normally, a short half-life is bad.
But in Bt’s case, it is actually good in that the short half-life
minimizes insect resistance. Additionally, when field tests were
performed on a sample of transgenic corn, researchers discovered better
protection from root damage by Western corn rootworm than by chemical
pesticides. Bacillus thuringiensis Wiki
Bacillus thuringiensis Goes Transgenic
Bt seems to have a bright future until the 1990s, when bugs around
the world began to evolve, growing extremely resistant to pesticides.
The European corn borer, the bollworm (Helicoverpa armigera) and
arthropods of all sorts were becoming worse pests than they ever had
been before. Alike the story of any sci-fi novel, the solution to this
devestating problem had come from a very interesting source, but this
story is reality.
During the 1980s, research teams in laboratories from many different
corners of the world had been developing a very interesting technology.
This technology is what we know of today as genetic modification, the
organisms referred to as GMOs or transgenic life forms.
Though working with plants was not the first time a transgenic being
had come to life, scientists had been working with identifying key genes
in Bt strains and applying them to plants such as tobacco, tomato and
cotton. These new transgenic plants were trial tested in the mid to late
1980s, the plants were successful at producing the crystal protein
chains that tear the guts of susceptible insects apart. Transgenic Plants: Present Status and Social and Economic Impacts

genetics. Note the speed at which this area of science has evolved in
the last thirty years.” A brief history of genetic modification
The following link describes a long history of Bt and it’s many uses within the field of GMO technology. Insect Resistant Plants and Genetic Engineering Transgenic Bt Plants and Human Health
Now, the thing is that these Bt toxins are actually not
even harmless to mammals (Portilho et al., 2013) and we need to ask
ourselves about the ecological sense in creating something which cannot
be eaten by the other organisms in the ecosystem.
- Are GMOs All Bad? The Truth About GMOs
Just what was Michael Thomas, fellow write at Exposing The Truth,
trying to tell us? According to the report he was referencing, the use
of specific Bt genes in GMOs rendered the strains hematotoxic!
Hematoxins destroy red blood cells, disrupt blood clotting and may cause
damage to cell tissues and organs. While this may not be the case in
the use of natural Bt, transgenic plants spliced with certain types of
Bt may cause a massive amount of health problems when consumed over a
long period of time. The more of this stuff we eat the more toxic our
blood becomes. Portilho et al., 2013
How could this have happened, why wouldn’t the researchers have known
that this would be a problem? When it comes to Genetically Modified
Organisms, specifically in the United States, the Food and Drug
Administration’s approval policy is currently 21 years old. The approval
system is very outdated, especially for these times in which scientific
discovery and progress occurs nearly overnight! The story does become
more fishy though, something just doesn’t seem right about sacrificing
human health in the name of progress.
The FDA policy (unchanged since 1992) places
responsibility on the producer or manufacturer to assure the safety of
the food, explicitly relying on the producer/manufacturer to do so:
“Ultimately, it is the responsibility of the producer of a new food
to evaluate the safety of the food and assure that the safety
requirement of section 402(a)(1) of the act is met.”
So it is the company, not any independent scientific review,
providing the research that is relied on to assert safety. FDA guidance
to industry issued in 1997 covered voluntary “consultation procedures,”
but still relied on the developer of the product to provide safety data.
There is currently no regulatory scheme requiring GM food to be tested
to see whether it is safe for humans to eat.
The FDA approach can be understood as the result of having a dual
mission. In addition to its mission to protect food safety, the FDA was
charged with promotion of the biotech industry.”

Health Studies
The scientists already knew that Bt toxin was very toxic
and potentially deadly at levels above 270 milligrams per kilogram
(basically ppm), so they instead tested levels ranging from 27mg/kg,
136mg/kg, and 270mg/kg for one to seven days (each of the Cry toxins
were separated out and tested individually to maximize accuracy and
total info). It was quite clear right off the bat that these Cry toxins
were quite hemotoxic even at the lowest level of 27mg/kg administered
only one time and one day as they clearly had damaged the blood,
particularly in reference to red blood cells. The quantity and size of
the erythrocytes (RBCs) were both significantly reduced, as was the
overall levels of hemoglobin for which oxygen to attach to.

The manners in which we go about these methods has to change. Genetic
engineering has the potential of being an amazingly wonderful
technology, but when society allows things so complex to go on unchecked
is when things run astray. Is it possible to engineer life that isn’t
harmful to the natural environment? Can we learn, as a species, to grow
in harmony with all around us or will we fall victim to our own
necessity for progress?
Taking a nap, we've seen time and again, is like rebooting your brain. But napping may be as much of an art as it is a science. Scientists offer recommendations for planning your perfect nap, including how long to nap and when.
P
The
sleep experts in the article say a 10-to-20-minute power nap gives you
the best "bang for your buck," but depending on what you want the nap to
do for you, other durations might be ideal:
For a quick boost of alertness, experts say a 10-to-20-minute power nap is adequate for getting back to work in a pinch.
For
cognitive memory processing, however, a 60-minute nap may do more good,
Dr. Mednick said. Including slow-wave sleep helps with remembering
facts, places and faces. The downside: some grogginess upon waking.
Finally,
the 90-minute nap will likely involve a full cycle of sleep, which aids
creativity and emotional and procedural memory, such as learning how to
ride a bike. Waking up after REM sleep usually means a minimal amount
of sleep inertia, Dr. Mednick said.P
In
addition to those recommendations, one surprising suggestion is to sit
slightly upright during your nap, because it will help you avoid a deep
sleep. And if you find yourself dreaming during your power naps, it may
be a sign you're sleep deprived. While you're planning your nap, don't forget totime it during the right time of dayas well.
